In conjunction with Nightdive Studios, id Software and Bethesda have officially published Quake 2 Remastered , a classic old-school first-person shooter produced by id Software and launched in 1997, which was originally exposed to the public when it was rated in Korea back in June.

While the makers prefer to call it an “enhanced version” rather than a remaster, this release includes a host of upgrades that are comparable to a remaster. New content and maps, cross-play, online multiplayer, co-op capabilities, bot support, restored AI behaviours, and the original Sonic Mayhem soundtrack are among the improvements.

What Does Quake 2 Remastered Contain?

Furthermore, the enhanced edition of Quake 2 Remastered contains the original game’s expansion packs: The Reckoning Mission Pack and Ground Zero Mission Pack. This update adds over 30 new single-player stages as well as over 20 new Deathmatch maps.

In addition, a new expansion dubbed Call of the Machine has been included, created by MachineGames, the studio behind Wolfenstein: The New Colossus. The addition, which includes 28 story stages and a new Deathmatch map, challenges you to “fight across time and space to find the Strogg-Maker, destroy it, and change fate itself.”

Furthermore, the improved version of Quake II includes its Nintendo 64 adaption. Midway originally launched this beloved iteration solely for the Nintendo 64, but it is now available to all Quake II gamers, along with modern upgrades.

This version also includes the game’s full multiplayer suite, which means it supports cross-platform play, split-screen play, and LAN play. The game has been remastered in 4K resolution and runs at a crisp 60 frames per second.

Where was Quake 2 Remastered Announced?

The surprise release coincides with the opening of QuakeCon 2023, the annual event at which gamers gather for a weekend-long LAN Party organised by id Software. The Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Centre in Grapevine, Texas, is hosting this year’s event.

Limited Run Games also revealed that, in addition to the digital release, numerous physical special editions would be available for pre-order on Friday. For $149.99, gamers will receive a boxed copy of Quake II remastered on their preferred platform, as well as a steel book.
