Tree trimming in the sidewalk outside Universal Studios has become a contentious issue in the ongoing conflict between Hollywood studios and striking screenwriters and actors.

Tree Trimming

Some members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) believe that the studio intentionally pruned the trees to deny shade to workers picketing under the scorching Southern California sun.

Demonstrators gathered to protest the perceived action, with one woman wearing a symbolic green wreath on her head and holding a sign depicting an untrimmed tree with the words “Never Forget.”

In response to the mounting controversy, the Los Angeles city controller’s office initiated an investigation into the tree trimming outside Universal Studios.

The studio’s owners, NBC Universal, denied any intent to worsen conditions for striking actors and writers during the heat. LA city controller Kenneth Mejia’s social media posts initially stated that the trees were managed by the city and that businesses could obtain permits for tree trimming.

However, a later update revealed that no tree trimming permits had been issued for the location in the past three years, and the City had not granted permits for the recent trimming.

The ficus tree dispute has escalated tensions between the entertainment industry and its striking workforce.

As investigations continue, both sides await further developments that could influence public opinion in this contentious battle between Hollywood studios and their determined employees.
