The Academy Software Foundation has unveiled its latest hosted project, OpenImageIO (OIIO), a versatile library designed for VFX applications and pipelines, enabling scripted manipulation of digital image files. Created in 2008 by Larry Gritz, a Software Architect at Sony Pictures Imageworks, OIIO has become an essential open-source tool in the VFX industry, providing scalability and functionality for professional VFX and animation feature film workflows.

OpenImageIo

A Pioneering Open Source Project for VFX
OIIO, one of the earliest open-source projects in the VFX industry, was generously open-sourced by its creator, Larry Gritz, and has been widely adopted by VFX and animation studios globally. The library’s integration into leading commercial products speaks to its significance and popularity within the community.

Format-agnostic API
One of the key strengths of OpenImageIO is its format-agnostic API, which facilitates production software’s reading and writing of image data across a broad range of file formats encountered in motion pictures. From industry-standard formats like TIFF, OpenEXR, and DPX to more common formats like JPEG and DSLR raw, OIIO supports them all, ensuring smooth interoperability for VFX professionals.

Extensive Image Manipulation Capabilities
The library’s functionality goes beyond format handling, boasting a comprehensive set of library classes to manipulate entire images effectively. This feature allows users to perform diverse image processing and conversion operations, making it a valuable asset in the VFX and animation production pipelines.

OpenImageIO
In light of its latest hosted project, the Academy Software Foundation has organized several events to showcase OpenImageIO’s capabilities. On August 1, Larry Gritz will host a session dedicated to OIIO as part of the foundation’s Virtual Town Hall Series, building up to the highly anticipated annual Open Source Days event on August 6. Furthermore, the Academy Software Foundation has arranged a Birds of a Feather session for OpenImageIO on Monday, August 7, at SIGGRAPH, where industry professionals can engage and discuss the library’s potential.
